The flash of optical light (visible to the human eye) after the planet’s demise showed up in observations by the Caltech-led Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), an instrument based at Palomar Observatory in Southern California that looks for cosmic events that change in brightness rapidly, sometimes in a matter of hours. Recent observations show the star has returned to the size and brightness it was before merging with the planet. The transfer of energy caused the star to temporarily increase in size and become a few hundred times brighter. Drag from the atmosphere slowed the planet down, shrinking its orbit and eventually sending it below the star’s visible surface, like a meteor burning up in Earth’s atmosphere. The star is at the beginning of the final phase of its life – its red giant phase, which can last more than 100,000 years.Īs the star expanded, its outer atmosphere eventually surrounded the planet. The planet was likely about the size of Jupiter, with an orbit even closer to its star than Mercury’s is to our Sun. Researchers discovered the event – formally called ZTF SLRN-2020 – using multiple ground-based observatories and NASA’s NEOWISE (Near-Earth Object Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer) spacecraft, which is managed by the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Poppy shoved me off, stood up, and laughed. Just a little bit, just because my heart was so full, just a couple of small little tears. All because someone said Holly’s hair was prettier than her own.Īfter we slept together, I started crying. She was the high school queen who reached forward one day during math class, grabbed Holly Trueblood’s thick, white-blond hair in her fist, and cut it off at the skull while Holly screamed and screamed. She was the neighborhood hero who organized games of Burn the Witch and got everyone to play. She was the girl next door who fell off her bike and laughed at her bloody knees. People say you can’t feel real love that young, but I did. We were both sixteen, and I’d been in love with her since I was a kid, since I was still reading monster comics and spending too much time practicing sleight-of-hand tricks because I wanted to be a magician. The first time I slept with Poppy, I cried. ***This excerpt is from an advance uncorrected proof***Ĭopyright © 2016 April Genevieve Tucholke This was an artistic tragedy for a number of reasons. But for comics diehards, its release is nothing short of (forgive the unintentional pun, but no other word seems appropriate) miraculous.įor decades, it was an article of faith that the world would never see a legal reprinting of Miracleman, a seminal British series of the 1980s (it was originally titled Marvelman, but we’ll get to that in a moment). Such joy might seem like overkill to an outsider - after all, the book is merely a collection of superhero comics published more than 30 years ago. As I held Marvel’s just-released Miracleman Book One: A Dream of Flying in my hands a few days ago, my fingers trembled and these thoughts overtook me: Dreams can come true. I don’t wish to have any connection with the Communists.” Matchevici came back from the discussion with the political officer and died in the same cell I was in. I cannot give information even against them. The men who betray us do us much harm but I cannot reward evil with evil. But give us information about those who oppose you so you will save your life!” Matchevici answered, as promptly as the first time, “I am a disciple of Christ and He has taught us to love even our enemies. I understand that you don’t want to betray your comrades. Toward you they are traitors who are doing you much harm, informing us about your words and deeds. We would like to know in what measure they are sincere. They claim to be Communist and they are denouncing you. Some of the prisoners have become our informers. But I would like to make another proposal. I didn’t expect any other answer from you. I prefer to die.” The officer of the secret police shook Matchevici’s hand and said, “I congratulate you. “Matchevici answered, “I don’t wish to remain alive and be ashamed to look in a mirror, because I will see the face of a traitor. …the library-after-dark setting works a magic all its own, taking Lies and his audience to an intensely personal place." Ghosted is one of the best second-chance romances I have ever read and there isn’t anything that I didn’t love about it. He’s talented, has stars in his eyes, and knows that he can make it as an actor if given the chance.Īfter years of scraping by, he finally gets his big break, but he loses everything that is dear to him in the process-his dedicated girlfriend, a chance to be a dad to his daughter, his sobriety, and even his own happiness. She’s hardworking and trying her best to provide for her child, since Madison’s dad is out of the picture. Kennedy is a single mother to a daughter, working at a local grocery store to make ends meet. I couldn’t put it down and if you’re anything like me, you know that’s the sure sign of being pulled in and completely immersed in the story. If you like second-chance romance, you are going to love Ghosted because it is beautifully written, plotted perfectly, and pours on the feelings and emotions. Why did I wait so long to read my first book by JM Darhower? WHY? After reading Ghosted, I can honestly say I am kicking myself for waiting so long…because what I just read was amazingly EPIC!! |
